Nestled between mountains, rivers, jungles, and beaches, Kampot is one of the best places to unwind and reconnect with nature. Kampot is a great place to release your inner child by embracing the many water activities.
Kayak down the Green Cathedral, a narrow meandering area north of town, or spend the day splashing around one of the many waterparks in Kampot. Many of the riverside resorts, like Retro Kampot Guesthouse*, Champa Lodge* and Meraki Kampot*, do rentals for $5/hour.
You can find a waterpark at Arcadia, with a dizzyingly fast waterslide, blob, and other floating water activities to try out. For only $5/day, this is a great place for backpackers to hang out. Another great-looking water park is Dong Prek Park, where you can zipline, take on the 50m rainbow slide or navigate the floating water course.

Another great way to experience the riverside charm is a bucket list stay in one of Kampots cute bungalows. Food plays a huge role in Vietnamese culture. Yet a lot of visitors are nervous to scratch below the surface of the well known classic Vietnamese dishes like Pho and Banh Mi. One of the best things to do in Hoi An is a cooking class. The calibre of schools here is higher than I’ve seen elsewhere in Vietnam, which
As a child, Cluedo was my first choice of board game. As an adult, my favourite TV shows and books revolve around crime and murder mystery. Living in Vietnam, Motorbiking
Vietnam is overwhelming for most people. New sights, new smells, new faces, new customs, new language. But one of the biggest things to adapt to is the traffic. The most common form of transport in Saigon, and across Vietnam, is motorbikes. There are lots of them. 8.5 million of them scooting about Ho Chi Minh City every day, to be
Learning to ride a motorbike is one of the best travel skills I’ve gained since moving to Vietnam. Nothing compares to the freedom of being able to scoot around without relying on public transport. As well as allowing me to explore Saigon with a depth I hadn’t realised I was missing, it’s enabled me to explore destinations across Vietnam and

The Hoi An Central Market is a hectic hive of activity. Everywhere you look there is something happening; from living chickens being bunched onto motorbike handles, to a boar leg being carved in the middle of the traffic. You’ll find colourful, exotic veggies on every corner and the aroma of fresh fish assaulting your nostrils. Not to mention the constant hum of vendors bartering with tourists and locals alike. Market scenes in Vietnam are something to be seen, and the Hoi An market is a great one to check out.
Hoi An Food Market
Hoi An Central market has many different food areas; outside is fresh produce, inside is a meat court (best to avoid if you’re squeamish) and by the riverside is fish (again, best to avoid if you’re squeamish). If you want to watch the locals buy and sell, then visit in the early morning for peak activity.
Textile shopping
I mostly explored the food side of the market, however if you step inside the main hall you’ll find all sorts of vendors. Of course, being Hoi An, there are a lot of tailors and fabric stalls inside. While I haven’t had anything made by anyone in the Hoi An market, Avery from Anywhere and Averywhere highly rates Sewing Bee Hoi An (shop #11).
Around the fringes of the market you’ll find shops selling wicker items, like bags, baskets and hats. Over the years these have become more and more tourist-aimed but they still have some unique items.
Visiting with a Guide
I first visited the Hoi An market as part of my cooking class with Thuan Tinh Cookery school, where we bought the ingredients for the dishes we were about to make. It was so interesting to visit with a local guide as they were able to show us some of the unusual fruits and vegetables that we don’t get in the west, as well as answering any general questions we had about market culture, like how to barter.

Exploring the abandoned waterpark in Hue sneaks in as one of the highlights of my motorbike trip across Vietnam, though it’d be more accurate to give it a place as a highlight from all my travels. Maybe it was the company of talented and creative friends, or maybe it was the thrill of sneaking in to explore somewhere off-limits, but there
