While on our cookery course with Thuan Tinh Cookery school, we were taken to explore the Hoi An market, giving us an authentic peak into the local life.

The market was a hectic hive of activity – colourful vegetables on every corner and the smell of fresh fish assaulting your nostrils, not to mention the constant hum of vendors bartering with tourists and locals alike. Everywhere you looked there was something interesting going on, from chickens (still alive) being bunched onto the handlebars of motorbikes, to a boar leg being carved in the middle of the traffic to crabs trying to escape their fate by climbing out of their buckets.

It was crazy. But in a wonderful, mesmerising way (I could easily have wandered around for longer). I’m afraid that all the activity around us drove me a bit trigger happy, so I thought I would share some of the resulting images with you. I’ve tried to capture the markets energy in this photo collection, I hope you can feel it and are transported there too!

Hoi An Market

Markets are such a great way to get accustomed to a new destination and definitely something you should try to see if you can! The Hoi An market last all day, but the best time to see the action is first thing in the morning, as that is when locals will be picking up their groceries.

If you plan to do some of your own shopping then there are plenty fruits you can buy, and even some tourist-aimed stalls are appearing around the fringes of the market. Look out for the shops selling wicker bags, they are hard to find elsewhere yet so cute and timelessly stylish (in my opinion) that you need to indulge in some while visiting!
